Based in Glasgow, I primarily work on commission basis, including on-site work. Depending on the size of the sculpture I will most often use petrol and/or battery chainsaw and at times other machine tools such as an angle grinder. To finish the work, add texture and detail I always use chisels and a mallet because I think hand tools add a dynamic quality to wood sculptures.
As a material wood is so versatile and full of character that unsurprisingly it lends itself amazingly in creation of engineered pieces as well. From wooden marionettes to the dancing jig dolls I take commissions to create bespoke creatures that can move!
Not to forget furniture of course; I've been developing a few relief-carved pieces in the past half a year, watch out for updates.
As a term 'chainsaw carving' can cover anything from outdoor benches and garden furniture to detailed carvings of people or animals.
I welcome commissions for chainsaw sculptures up to 2.5m tall. For outdoor carvings I mainly work in oak because it's the most durable wood for this purpose and adds excellent character due its beautiful grain. I will however consider many other woods, like yew, cedar and pine, especially if that means that a life of a tree that had to be cut down will be extended!
So whether you have a sculpture in mind, or a stump you'd like turned into chainsaw art, get in touch and we can discuss the options. While I am based in Glasgow I will happily travel, depending on the distance and the size of the chainsaw carving.
"I did this workshop as a complete wood working novice, and am so chuffed that I went home with a beautiful hair pin (made by me!).
The course was so well structured, the atmosphere relaxed, and the biscuits and tea/coffee free-flowing. Justina explained every step to us, including plenty of interesting facts about the wood she works with and her own practices, and I left feeling that I had a much better understanding of wood work than when we started the day. She also put an emphasis on letting us choose what we wanted to work on, but was always available to provide guidance.
I loved that safety was a priority at all times (from masks to protect against sawdust to gloves and other protective equipment while using sharp tools), so even as a novice, I felt safe in the workshop's environment.
Overall, I had such a fun and educational day and am getting lots of compliments for my lovely hair pin. I can see myself returning for birthday parties and special occasions with friends!"
